Bookkeeping
Reliable reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and clear reporting, organised around the way your business works.
Learn more about BookkeepingHeidelberg is home to one of Victoria's largest medical precincts and a busy commercial centre around Burgundy Street. Brian helps the practitioners, contractors and local business owners who work here keep clean records and lodge on time.
Health care and social assistance is the largest employing industry in Banyule, and Heidelberg is where most of that work is concentrated. The Heidelberg Health Precinct brings together the Austin Hospital, the Mercy Hospital for Women, Warringal Private Hospital and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre. It's described as Victoria's second-largest medical precinct and forms part of the La Trobe National Employment and Innovation Cluster.
The precinct supports far more than hospital staff. There are specialists running consulting rooms, allied health practices, locums and agency contractors who move between sites, and a stream of small businesses that serve them. Many of those people are running a business without ever really deciding to.
A typical pattern looks like this: a salary from one of the hospitals, plus ABN income from private sessions, locum shifts or a few days a week in someone else's rooms. That mix raises questions a standard employee never faces. Tax usually isn't held back from ABN income, so a large bill can arrive at year end. PAYG instalments may start the following year. Registration fees, insurance and professional development often need to be split between the job and the practice. Travel between hospitals, clinics and patients' homes can raise its own questions, and a simple logbook kept from the start saves a lot of guesswork later.
Then there's GST. Many medical services are GST-free, but service fees paid to a practice, product sales and some non-clinical work can be treated differently. We keep advice general until we've seen your arrangements, then explain clearly what applies to you. Brian prepares and lodges your tax return as a registered tax agent and, if you're registered, takes care of your BAS and GST each quarter. If you're thinking about moving from contracting into your own rooms, we can walk through the numbers with you first.
Once you have rooms of your own, the work shifts to the business side. Patient fees, health fund and Medicare payments, rent and supplier invoices all need to be matched up, and our bookkeeping keeps that reconciled so you can see what each practitioner or service line brings in. If you employ a receptionist or practice manager, our payroll service handles their pay runs, super and Single Touch Payroll reporting.
Not everyone in Heidelberg wears scrubs. Heidelberg Central, built around Burgundy Street and the Warringal Shopping Centre, is a major activity centre with plenty of professional services and wellbeing businesses, and the Heidelberg Central Traders Association represents the precinct. Those owners get the same care from us, with services shaped around stock, staff or client billing as needed.
The suburb also carries real history. Painters of the Heidelberg School, including Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, worked in the area, and the original name Warringal is usually translated as "eagle's nest". The Old England Hotel and Banyule Homestead are still reminders of those early days.
Heidelberg is about nine kilometres from our Greensborough office, with Heidelberg station on Studley Road on the same Hurstbridge line. We know clinical rosters rarely line up with business hours, so Brian is happy to talk by phone or video early or late, meet at your rooms, or see you at our office on Grimshaw Street.

The ATO may also put you into PAYG instalments. We'll help you estimate what to set aside, keep records of your work expenses, and lodge the return for you.
It can, even when the health services you provide to patients are GST-free, because the service fee is generally treated as a separate arrangement between you and the practice. The answer depends on how your agreement is set up, so we look at the arrangement and your figures before advising you.
