Starting a business in Mernda? Set it up right from day one.

Mernda's town centre is still being built, and new businesses are opening alongside it. If you're a first-time owner, Brian can help you get the foundations right: software, GST, your first BAS and, when the time comes, your first employee.

A town centre still taking shape

Mernda sits at the very end of the Mernda line. Its station on Bridge Inn Road opened on 26 August 2018, six months ahead of schedule, as part of an 8 km extension that also brought Hawkstowe and Middle Gorge stations. Beside the station, at the corner of Plenty Road and Bridge Inn Road, the Mernda Town Centre is a large mixed-use development that is still being built out. It's projected to bring more than 1,000 ongoing jobs, and the plans include restoring the historic Mayfield Farm. The City of Whittlesea lists Mernda as a developing major activity centre.

For someone opening a new shopfront here, or launching a business from one of the surrounding streets, that means building everything from scratch.

Getting the foundations right

A new business is the best time to do things properly, because there's nothing to untangle later. With first-time owners, we usually work through these steps in order:

  1. Choosing a structure. Sole trader, partnership, company and trust each carry different tax and record-keeping consequences. We'll talk through how each would work for your plans, so you can choose with your eyes open.
  2. Setting up your software. We set up Xero, QuickBooks Online or MYOB with a chart of accounts that fits your business, bank feeds connected and invoice templates ready to send.
  3. Registering for GST. If your turnover will reach the threshold, or you'd like to register voluntarily, we take care of registration and explain how GST applies to what you sell and buy.
  4. Lodging your first BAS. This is where new owners most often get stuck. We prepare and lodge it with you, explaining what each figure means so the next one feels familiar.
  5. Hiring your first employee. When you're ready, we get withholding, super and Single Touch Payroll in place and run your payroll from the first pay.

Opening a shopfront in Mernda

Tenants moving into a new centre face a run of upfront costs before the first sale: fit-out, equipment, stock, bond and rent. Tracking them from the start matters, because some are deductible straight away and others are depreciated over several years. A simple budget and cash flow forecast, built through our business advisory service, shows how long your savings or loan need to last before takings catch up.

It also helps to agree early on how often you'll look at your numbers. In the first year, a monthly check of sales against forecast tells you quickly whether your opening hours, staffing and pricing are working, while there's still time to change them. New suburbs fill up over time, so early trading may not reflect where the business ends up as more homes and the rest of the town centre are completed. Knowing that in advance makes a quiet first quarter less alarming.

Working together at a distance

Mernda is one of the furthest suburbs from our Greensborough office, about 14 km away, so we'll be straight with you: visits happen by arrangement rather than at short notice. Most of the work is done in the cloud. You see your figures in your own accounting software whenever you like, and Brian is a phone or video call away when a question comes up. When meeting in person makes sense, such as at the beginning or at tax time, we'll plan it in, and a Mernda business that's set up well in the cloud rarely needs us at the door to keep running smoothly.

FAQs

Questions from Mernda business owners.

Can you visit me in Mernda?

Yes, by arrangement. Mernda is about 14 km from our office, so we plan visits rather than dropping in. Many owners like to meet in person at the start and at tax time, and handle everything in between by phone, video and email while we work in your cloud accounting software.

Should I start as a sole trader or set up a company?

It depends on your expected profit, the risks in your industry, whether you'll take on partners and how you want to pay yourself. We'll walk through how each structure is taxed and what records it needs, so you can decide with your lawyer or adviser knowing the full picture.

I've signed a lease in the Mernda Town Centre. What should I sort out before opening?

Get your accounting software running before you spend much, so fit-out, equipment and stock costs are recorded from the beginning. Decide on GST registration, set up your point-of-sale and bank feeds, and if you'll have staff from opening day, have payroll ready before the first roster.
